Nature and Scope
The success of the café is dependent on the effectiveness of the management. The whole operation must present a friendly and welcoming environment in which customers and members alike feel comfortable, enjoying excellent service and product. While receiving advice from the Senior Management team and the Directors of the Sports Club, the successful development of the cafe will depend to a large extent on the imagination, initiative and energy of the Manager. A combination of flexibility, enthusiasm, innovation and sound organisational skills is essential.
Purpose of Job
• To manage the Café and staff and optimise profit, ensuring a high level of product and service, whilst remaining consistent with its green ethos and community focus. To collaborate with the Senior Management team.
Principle Responsibilities
Under the guidance and overall control of the manager to:
• Manage all aspects of the daily running of the café including some food preparation
• Develop and manage relationships with customers, staff and suppliers
• Train and manage all staff to ensure consistency and quality of product and service
• Create a good atmosphere for staff and customers; ensure effective team-work and a positive, committed attitude from staff
• Contribute to the successful implementation of new café development ideas. To look at seasonal opportunities and work with the Sports Club Senior Management team to build an event calendar that will keep the business prosperous, interesting and engaging
• Be responsible for the ordering and stock management process including management of EPOS stock levels and to help with and oversee period stock take
• Engage the cafe community with relevant offers and promotions, and work closely with the Senior Management team to ensure they are effectively implemented and reviewed
• Be fully conversant in current regulations to ‘Health and Safety at Work’, ‘Food and Hygiene’ regulations, firefighting equipment and precautions, restrictions on the sale of alcohol and age restricted products
• Have budgetary responsibility and daily cash handling responsibilities
• Undertake regular reviews of the overall business in line with local competition and with the Senior Management Team make recommendations of developmental opportunities; manage the process of peer analysis
• Participate in appropriate training to support the Club Manager in reviewing, defining and planning the implementation of the strategic objectives
• Carry out any other reasonable tasks from time to time that may be delegated by the Manager or Company Secretary
Person Specification
Essential criteria:
• Proven barista skills and training
• Food and hygiene or food handling certificate (level 2 Food Hygiene certificate)
• Strong business acumen and track record of evolving the commercial needs of a catering/ hospitality business (i.e. experience of generating spreadsheets, analysing weekly figures, making changes where necessary)
• Working knowledge of Health and Safety
• Previous cafe management and staff management experience, with direct experience of overseeing coffee production and food and hygiene
• experience of handling money
Working with people
• Customer service experience, gained in a private or public role
• Ability to deal calmly and confidently with demands from the public, including difficult situations
• Helpful and positive attitude when dealing with colleagues and members; being open and receptive to ideas from others
• Professional, hygienic and courteous presentation at all times
Working with words
• Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills
• experience of explaining complex points effectively to visitors and staff
• Good IT skills for letter writing, sending emails, navigating a computerised Front of House system, security systems as well as a range of computer software
Organisation Skills
• Ability to multitask and project-manage various schemes, sometimes with conflicting deadlines, without compromising on quality
• Ability to assess the priorities within daily operations and in a pressurised environment
• Awareness and understanding of the organisation’s scope
• Consistently achieving agreed results in good time, persevering and seeing things through
• Punctual and dependable
• Pro-active approach to time management, ensuring the quite times are used effectively to prepare for the busy periods

Special Conditions:
Salary reviews may be subject to performance in terms of meeting all targets as set out in your personal development plan. The Café Manager will be based at JAGS Sports Club but may be required to work at other locations within the school premises. The hours of work per week will be 39 hours, generally completed on a Rota basis. The post holder may not carry out any other duties at the school without first obtaining the agreement of the Manager, permission not being unreasonably withheld. The post holder may not enter into any form of employment without first obtaining the agreement from the Club Manager.
