Purpose of Role:
To encourage and enable people with sight to gain independence skills through the use of ICT, including Smart and assistive technology.
Main Tasks:
• To support people with sight loss to learn and use ICT and Smart devices including magnification and speech software
• To support learners on a one to one basis adopting a person centred approach
• To communicate at a level appropriate to the audience and to check understanding of the topic
• To set realistic learning targets
• To assist with the use of equipment such as printers and scanners
• To find effective solutions to barriers to learning
• To be aware of Health and Safety Standards and maintain an appropriate level of safety
• To report any concerns to the Volunteer Coordinator and Service Manager as soon as possible
• Attend regular supervision/support meetings with the Volunteer Co-coordinator

Skills and Attributes:
• Proficient in Microsoft Office packages, typing tutor and assistive technology such as zoom text, Window Eyes
• experience of working in a classroom or centre based environment is desirable
• experience of assisting others to learn is desirable
• Ability to volunteer as part of a team
• Ability to follow instructions
• Punctuality and reliability in attending each session
• Be able to give clear verbal instructions
• Have a good sense of humour
• Be able to demonstrate good listening skills and patience
• Ability to understand the issues faced by individuals with sight loss
• Non-judgemental and able to treat people with respect
• Have an interest in supporting people in the community
A DBS check is required for this role and full induction and training will be provided.
