Mark is a charming and charismatic 14-year-old. He loves going for walks and to the park, going to local shops, helping with the shopping and swimming. He also likes watching his favourite cartoons on iPad and reading books.
Mark is autistic, has processing sensory disorder and suffers from epilepsy. His epilepsy is controlled by daily medication and there is a protocol to administer emergency medication if needed. He has limited verbal communication and uses Makaton. Mark requires support with his daily activities and social skills. Although Mark is normally happy and affectionate, when frustrated he can present with challenging behaviour and become aggressive; he can be unsettled by changes in his routine and needs to be informed about changes in advance. You’ll need be fit, strong and vigilant to ensure Mark's safety, especially when outside.
Mark attends a special needs school and is making great progress out and about in the community. You will support Mark during his after-school routine; assisting with personal care, having dinner, playing and/or going out for a walk and accessing activities. During the school holidays you will organise fun activities and outings.
You will need extensive experience with children or young adults with ASD and communication difficulties. You’ll have the opportunity to work alongside an ABA supervisor and implement some of the principles into Mark’s daily routine. The main goal is to help Mark take part in everyday life and improve his social and communication skills.
