We are looking for an experienced, self-motivated candidate for our Buys NHS General Practitioner Practice.
Job Summary
Receive and support patients to access appropriate healthcare services in a professional, courteous, efficient and effective way. Project a positive and friendly image to patients and other visitors, either in person or via the telephone. Provide general administrative assistance to the practice team to ensure that patients receive the high quality service that the practice aims for and that the practice runs in an efficient and effective way.
This is a Full-Time post including evening work and weekend work (Saturday’s) on a Rota basis.
Responsibilities and Duties

Handling telephone and face to face requests for appointments and making the appointments on the computerised appointments system.
Booking in patients when they arrive at the surgery (when necessary).
Helping new patients register with the surgery and managing associated paperwork.
Managing requests for prescriptions.
Taking phone messages and passing calls from patients, hospitals etc. To other colleagues.
Responding to patient requests for information about other NHS services.
Receiving and documenting payments for non-NHS services such as taxi medicals, HGV medicals, travel claim forms, some travel vaccinations etc.
Checking consulting rooms each morning – turning on computers etc.
Checking lights, windows computers etc. At the end of each day.
Straightening/tidying the waiting room at the end of the day.
Receiving and checking deliveries
Open up premises at the start of the day when first to arrive – deactivate the alarm and make all necessary preparations to receive patients.
When last to leave at the end of the day, ensure the building is totally secured, internal lights are off and the alarm activated.
Undertake any other additional duties appropriate to the post as requested by the partner or practice manager.


Opening and sorting post, scanning it onto patient records.
Creating tasks from information received – to ensure information is acted on appropriately.
Advising patients of the results of routine tests.
Calling patients to arrange for routine appointments, e.g. For immunisations, asthma checks, diabetes checks etc.
Inputting patient information into the computerised system.
Producing letters to other health organisations as required.


GCSE English and Maths Grade A-C or equivalent.
Two ‘A’ levels / NVQ3 – or extensive previous experience.

Skills / experience

Impeccable English, friendly, articulate with excellent telephone manners and first class customer service skills.
Good working knowledge of Microsoft office and comfortable with working with computers.
Previous working experience within a health environment ideal but not essential as training will be provided.
Flexibility for covering shifts at short notice.


The role is eligible for the NHS pension scheme.

NOTE: An Enhanced Disclosure Barring Service Check will be required.
