You at your best
Prison officer opportunities
HMP and YOI Wormwood Scrubs, London
Starting salary is £33,060 for a 41 hour week (includes additional allowance) + excellent benefits
Prison officers protect the public and help offenders turn their lives around.
If you have the integrity, skills and strength of character we’re looking for, you’ll receive an attractive salary, pension and a broad range of benefits.
It’s a fast-paced role, where no two days are ever the same. And, as you gain experience, you’ll find a range of opportunities to grow and develop into.
What you can expect from us
HMP and YOI Wormwood Scrubs will be converting to a new remand-only site for adult males waiting for trial in the London region – a completely fresh initiative for a well-established name – so it’s the perfect time to join us. The prison also features a Visitors Centre run by a children’s charity, Spurgeon’s.
We’ll make sure you get great training and plenty of opportunities for progression and development – including the chance to specialise in different areas; including dog-handling, investigative roles and search training.
Not only that, in addition to a good salary, you’ll join the Civil Service pension scheme and receive financial assistance with your accommodation, as part of any government key worker housing policies in your area.
You will also receive a number of other benefits, including 25 days’ holiday allowance each year, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, Employee Assistance Programme and Cycle to Work scheme.
While the rewards are certainly attractive, it’s not the only thing you’ll gain from a profession in the prison service. There’s also the sense of achievement you feel when you’ve helped an offender to get their life back on track. It’s the kind of experience you simply won’t find anywhere else.
What we expect from our prison officers
There’s no such thing as a typical prison officer. Our people come from many different walks of life, just like the prisoners they work with. What you will need though is empathy, self-confidence and great communication skills.
That’s because, no matter how challenging the situation, you’ll take the time to build constructive, positive and professional relationships with often vulnerable offenders who are at the lowest point in their lives.
Teamwork plays a vital role in this environment, so we‘ll expect you to be fully committed to supporting your colleagues and understand the importance of acting as one team to keep the prison, prisoners and everyone who works here safe.
How to apply
It takes a special kind of person to be a great prison officer. If you're ready to start a rewarding new profession, apply now.
