My son is a charming 9-years old on the ASD spectrum who attends Year 4, in a mainstream primary school. I’m looking for an engaging and responsible mentor who will look after him after school as I work full time. The position will be available from July 10th but we can consider an earlier start for the ideal candidate.
My son is verbal and high functioning. He is friendly and affectionate and wants to fit in but doesn’t always know how to. Helping him making friends is the number one objective for the mentor who will join us. I organize regular play-dates and I’m looking for a mentor who can earn my son’s trust and encourage him to expand his social circle. I believe that with the right support, my son can grow into an independent, confident and well-rounded young man.
His potential is huge and his diagnosis is not intended as a label to define or limit him: conversely, it should be viewed as a compass which can help us understand his current challenges and his point of view.
I look for a mentor who can genuinely cherish, appreciate and celebrate my son’s uniqueness, talents and personality and be authentically optimistic about his future.
The role
We are looking for an engaging, playful and motivating educator.
We hope you love sports and can encourage my son to practice some.
He is into basketball now and he is starting to like football.
This is much more than a nannying job.
While some tasks and expectations will be similar, we are looking for a dynamic person with a sheer passion for teaching, playing and inspiring a child on the verge of becoming a young boy.
Previous experience with children with additional needs or a background in teaching would be a bonus. Yet, the right personality, attitude, and sensitivity will count more than any formal qualification.
You will need buckets of energy, patience and be a self-starter. Making a positive difference to a child’s life must be your primary drive and motivation.
My son is making important progress and in order to sustain this positive trend, he needs to be involved in educational, social and fun activities on a daily basis. We will assess progress fortnightly, using the Son-Rise developmental model, which I will teach you.
The permanent contract will include 20 days of paid holidays plus eight bank holidays annually.
First Aid, CRB check, and references required.
A good level of spoken and written English is required.
Italian as a first or second language would be a plus.
This role is ideal for a university student or for someone who has a part-time morning job and can combine both roles effectively.
For my son continuity is very important. Our mentor will become much more than an employee. Your predecessors have been welcomed and treated as part of our extended family. We wish to hire a mentor who can stay in this role for minimum a year, ideally, two. Please only apply if you can commit for at least 12 months.
Typical timetable:
Monday- Friday: - 4 hours per day: 3:30 pm (school pick up) until 7:30 pm.
Ideally, we’d like our mentor to also work five hours on Sundays, for a total of 25 hours weekly. Occasional evening babysitting may be required.
If you believe to be the right candidate and wish to apply or receive more information, please email your CV. Please include a cover letter explaining why you believe you have what it takes to succeed in this mentoring role and how it fits with your career plans.
Thank you,
Simona.
