Job ref: AF/RH12 Male Support Worker Required in Islington
Male Support Worker required for a man in his twenties, who has cerebral palsy, learning disabilities and who experiences high levels of anxiety.
The role will involve working closely with the gentleman and his family in order to build a supportive and therapeutic relationship. We are looking for someone who can be a mentor and role-model as well as someone who is able to plan, organise and contribute ideas, follow instructions and support plans. You will be part of a small team involved with the gentleman’s support including another support worker, family members and other professionals. Once you have successfully completed an induction period you will spend time working on a one-to-one basis with the gentleman, both within his home and out in the community.
Main duties: Support and assistance with activities of daily living, including meal preparation, shopping, budgeting, organising, accessing the community, helping to identify appropriate social activities, and engaging with these. You will help the gentleman participate in activities of his choice (he especially enjoys baking, swimming, dancing, music and attending church), helping him to express his wishes and to express these in an appropriate way. You will also need to be able to work as part of a team and to communicate effectively with others involved in his support.
The support worker will be responsible for assisting the gentleman to plan and complete a new project as an introduction alongside training so the full job description can be implemented. The project will focus on baking and sourcing where the products can be sold locally. It will be divided in different stages that will evolve organically based on agreed milestones that include planning recipes, budgeting, shopping for ingredients, baking together, assisting in designing and ordering packaging, and selling the products locally. The support worker will be responsible for managing the project together with the gentleman, his family and team.
Full induction and training will be provided.
The successful candidate will:
• Be committed to remain in post in order to build rapport and trust (we are NOT looking for someone who is only looking for a short-term assignment).
• Be flexible in terms of hours and shifts.
• Have an understanding of person-centred support.
• Be cheerful, uplifting and motivating.
• Have a “can do” attitude.
• Be compassionate and sensitive to changing needs
• Be an effective communicator, able to work on own initiative, as well as part of a team
• Be passionate about social care and improving people’s lives
• Have experience or an interest in baking.
• Be a competent Swimmer.
There will be an initial induction period of around 16 weeks, with hours starting at 15 hours per week, gradually increasing to 30 hours per week on successful completion of the induction. Working days will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The recruitment process and selection will be led by the family.
Rates of Pay: £12 per hour (gross).The rate of pay will increase once the candidate completes the required training and proves to be able to provide effective support independently both at home and in the community.
5.6 weeks paid holiday per year.
