Tom is an outgoing, fun loving and sporty 15 year old who is looking for a Buddy to support him at home and in the community. Tom sustained a brain injury following surgery. He is mobile but has left-sided weakness which particularly affects his arm.
Prior to the brain injury, Tom was a very active and sport minded teenager and is struggling to come to terms with being disabled. Tom would really like to get back to playing sport, but has issues with body image and physical abilities, which restricts him and hence he spends most of his time playing computer games in his room.
He requires a Buddy who can help him build his self-confidence and give him a greater level of independence from his parents. He attends rugby training sessions outside of school and is keen to go to the gym to increase his fitness and aid his recovery. Part of your role will be to escort and drive him to/from the gym and the training sessions, including participating in some of the physical sessions.
You will actively encourage Tom to build his independence, support him to plan activities and structure his day; using your imagination/creativity to integrate him further into the wider community. You will also need to be able to follow through with recommendations made by therapists and medical professionals involved in his therapy and care.
This job will suit someone who shares Tom’s passion for sport and has an upbeat and motivating personality.
