Zack is a happy go lucky, chatty and energetic 4 year old boy. He has a broad taste in in music and a fantastic memory! Zack enjoys learning, works hard and can make great progress with the right support and the right approach.
Zack has a diagnosis of autism and has approximately a two year delay in his language (receptive and expressive). He finds social interaction, imaginative and exploratory play difficult, but his underlying cognitive skills and memory are quite good. When he is interested in a task, he has good focus and attention, but he finds this more challenging for adult led tasks, particularly in group learning situations (e.g. Circle time). He needs the right level and nature of support otherwise he tends to zone out in the classroom setting.
The LSA will be supporting Zack throughout the school day. Part of your role will be to help him access the curriculum by tailoring resources and instructions to his individual needs. He will have SALT sessions at school on a weekly basis which you would attend with him and then carry the work and techniques through into his class. Zack will also attend OT sessions outside school hours, and you would need to take on board advice and techniques here also (particularly in relation to movement breaks and motor planning). Promoting his own independence, facilitating his peer interaction and working closely with class teachers, therapists and Zack’s parents are all important aspects of the role, as is working towards target outcomes agreed with school and parents.
This position would suit someone who has a creative flair and is able to make resources to compliment his work. Being able to identify areas of his work that need more repetition using your own initiative and then looking at how these could be supported in a more visual or tactile way will be key. This is a great opportunity to help Zack integrate into a school setting and have a really positive impact. We are looking for someone with a blend of autism knowledge and classroom/teaching experience, and with the passion and creativity to find ways to help Zack reach his potential. For further information please speak to Rachael at SNAP who has met with the school and family.
