Do you have an advanced level of Spanish and English and a genuine interest in contributing to the wellbeing of individuals from newly settled communities in the capital? Then this volunteer role might be for you!
Since 1989, LADPP has been providing services to Spanish and Portuguese speakers, with a particular (but not exclusive) focus on those with disabilities. Chiefly our users are from Latin America but we also work with people from Europe and Africa. Increasingly we see the community facing barriers; language, exploitation, lack of information regarding British systems resulting in social exclusion, poverty, stress and in the worst cases, homelessness.
We provide a range of services aimed at supporting people to find work, learn English, understand and receive their rights, access healthcare and education. Our aims are to promote independence, wellbeing and community integration.
A large majority of our users live with mental health problems such as stress and depression. The Health and Wellbeing Project seeks to provide services to promote emotional wellbeing and share information about how people can live healthier lives.
Purpose of Role: To provide support and assistance, creating the right “climate” for all users to maximize their achievements across the spectrum of the charity.
What we are looking for: Someone with…
1. An advanced level of Spanish or Portuguese.
2. A background or interest in working with vulnerable people.
3. Knowledge of relaxing exercises routine, yoga routines or gentle exercises for elderly people.
4. You have a friendly and sympathetic personality and are very sensitive to responding to the needs of a person with mental health concerns.
5. An open-mind and a patient and approachable manner.
6. The ability to listen, communicate and engage with people of all ages, genders, races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, cultures and abilities with a non-judgemental approach.
7. The ability to work sensitively and responsibly with vulnerable people.
The Role: As a Wellbeing Activity Leader at LADPP, you will:
1. Plan activities using own initiative
2. Prepare necessary equipment / materials for activities
3. Motivate and engage with the group
4. Provide instruction / briefing to participants at the start of the activity
5. Ensure that users are safe and that risks/hazards are addressed
6. Manage the group dynamics between users during the activity and encourage a positive and friendly atmosphere
7. Answer informal queries and provide information about LADPP services or other opportunities
8. Lead a short feedback conversation with participants at the end of each activity
9. Maintain appropriate boundaries at all times
10. Attend training and supervision meetings at LADPP.
11. Act in accordance with LADPP’s with our policies of confidentiality and Health and Safety.
What would you gain?
We believe that volunteering is a two-way exchange of skills that should be beneficial for both parties. Volunteering with us, you would receive travel expenses, an initial induction, training, regular supervision and support from a named supervisor. In addition, you will have the opportunity to attend training from local volunteer centres.
We hope that by joining our volunteer team at LADPP you will:
1. Receive training on how to support vulnerable adults.
2. Learn skills and gain experience delivering workshops/activities to vulnerable people
3. Have the chance to make a real difference to our users’ lives.
4. Gain valuable experience and knowledge that could be helpful for future employment opportunities or further learning, particularly in the areas of wellbeing and psychology.
5. Have the possibility to practice other languages.
6. Increase your own self-confidence.
7. Attend social and cultural events organised by LADPP.
8. Make friends and have fun!
Time Commitment:
We are looking for volunteers able to commit to a 1 - 2 hours per week over a minimum of three months.
