As our Head of Underwriting and Claims Strategy you will lead a UK strategic UW team in managing and developing new philosophies and products, and sharing these with brokers, FDs and AMs and to oversee the technical quality of an operational UW and Claims team based in SA.
Responsibilities as our Head of Underwriting and Claims Strategy include:
- Set the UW strategy liaising with all relevant parties which includes actuaries, marketing, compliance, legal, reinsurers and the operational UW and claims teams.
- Seek new and effective ways to mitigate and monitor UW and claims risk.
- Support the product development team in developing new products with particular focus on understanding risk, process and reinsurance impacts in context of UW and claims.
- Be an excellent communicator. Able to command an audience and hold the attention of brokers and distribution teams in explaining UW and claims philosophy and related content.
- Negotiate reinsurance terms and conditions that support the companies objectives and operational structure.
- Extremely strong technical underwriting and claims skills that are recognised across the industry. Support ABI technical committees.
- Strong leadership qualities are essential, able to effectively manage conflict internally and externally. Have a strong sense of purpose and commercial awareness.
- Help Franchise Directors, Account Managers and Brokers understand the SIC severity model and advantages of this in respect of multiple claims.
- Maximize STP rates whilst maintaining excellent UW results. Analyse UW and claims MI and develop improvements to the customer journey.
- Manage the budget of the Strategic UW and Claims Team.
- Mentor, support, develop and provide expert advice and guidance to direct reports. Identify resource requirements and make appropriate business case for any additional resource required.
- Provide expert guidance on large, complex, contentious cases – liaising directly with reinsurers and distributors where required.
To become our Head of Underwriting and Claims Strategy, you will have the below skills and experience:
- Extensive experience of the UK protection market with deep knowledge of products and processes prevalent in the market.
- High level of technical underwriting and claims knowledge encompassing life, disability, critical/serious illness and income protection products.
- High profile and strong relationships with the reinsurance market.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple work-streams.
- Ability to analyse date and make evidence-based recommendations for change.
- Excellent people, mentoring, coaching and communication skills.
