Age UK Wandsworth works to improve the quality of life of older people and their carers in the London borough of Wandsworth through the provision of a range of preventative services. The Handyperson Service provides practical support in people’s homes to enable them to maintain independent living.
You will be visiting people in their homes to assist with a wide range of practical tasks such as fitting grab rails, Bannister rails and key safes, putting up blinds, changing tap washers and moving furniture to make space for hospital beds and equipment.
You will work closely with the office team to collect jobs and feedback any issues as well as complete basic paperwork to support the reporting process.
The successful candidate will be an experienced and enthusiastic handyperson, used to undertaking a wide range of work in people’s homes. You will also need to have strong interpersonal skills and enjoy working with older people.
The post is subject to an enhanced check from the Disclosure and Barring Service.

• To carry out falls prevention work, minor repairs and other tasks to enable older people to remain living safely and independently in their home.
• To carry out work in the homes of older people to a high standard and within agreed time scales
• To work in close cooperation with the Co-coordinator to ensure that the Service achieves and maintains the objectives of reliability, responsiveness and high standards
Responsibilities of the post
Specific work
• To provide a reliable and professional Handyperson Service to a consistently high standard, including jobs as detailed but not limited to:
Frequent/daily
o Supply and fitting mopstick handrails to stairs and hallways
o Fitting grab-rails in bathrooms, showers, toilets and doorways
o Fitting key safes
o Moving items of furniture
Often/weekly
o Change light bulbs
o Securing trailing wires and flexes
o Putting up blinds and curtain rails
o Putting up shelves, pictures and mirrors
o Put up / taking down curtains
o Unblocking sinks
o Changing tap washer
Occasional
o Securing loose, rucked-up or fraying carpets
o Check for clutter in hallway and on stairs
o Setting up computers and showing how to use them
o Fitting door bells
o Window cleaning (inside, all floors; outside, ground floor only
o Assembling furniture
o Changing fuses and plugs
o Fitting internal locks
o Fitting draught excluders and radiator foils
o Installing or repairing fixed wall cupboards
o Replacing toilet seats, sealant around the bath/sink/shower
General
• To work within the Handyperson procedures
• To ensure that all work is carried out to a high standard and to the satisfaction of the client and that the Health and Safety policy and Handyperson procedures are adhered to
• To ensure the client’s home is left clean and tidy on completion of the work and be responsible for the safe and proper removal of waste and debris.
• To carry out duties on a day to day basis with the minimum of supervision
• To be responsible for purchasing necessary materials and obtaining payments from clients where required
• To ensure that records are kept of the work carried out and job sheets are completed accurately
• To report to and to work under the supervision of the Service Co-coordinator and to attend and contribute to support and supervision sessions.
• To identify further support that the client may need and signpost to appropriate services or inform Service Coordinator of need
• To assist with administration in connection with the post
• To be responsible for keeping receipts and submitting expense forms on a monthly basis
• To keep the Coordinator informed of any issues that they need to be aware of
Promotion
• To help raise awareness amongst professionals and teams working with older people on issues in connection with repairs in the home
• To help publicise the service to ensure that householders and their friends or family, and professionals and teams working with older people are aware of the service and how to contact it
Additional requirements
• To work as an integral member of Age UK Wandsworth staff team
• To attend meetings as required
• To provide support to staff in promotional aspects of the service
• To attend training courses as required
• Carry out duties in accordance with Age UK Wandsworth’s policies and procedures, including Confidentiality, Equal Opportunities and Lone Working
• To carry out such other duties as may be required which are consistent with the duties and responsibilities of the post.
