The influence of transcutaneous nerve stimulation on acute pain perception.
Overview:
We are looking for females with ASD (autism spectrum disorder) aged 18–50 years to take part in a study on pain perception. This study uses electrical stimulation to investigate the influence of individual traits on pain perception and will take place at King’s College London, Denmark Hill campus.

We are looking for females with ASD aged 18–50 years to take part in a study on pain perception. Specifically, we are investigating the influence of transcutaneous nerve stimulation (TENS) on acute pain perception and how these processes can vary according to personality traits and in clinical populations. In order to investigate this, we need to administer painful but tolerable stimulation with or without simultaneous TENS. The TENS will send a small barely or not perceptible stimulation on your nerve that should reduce the intensity of the pain stimulation.
If you agree to take part in this study, you will be asked to complete a task during which you will receive painful but tolerable electrical stimulations on your hand while simultaneously receiving a TENS stimulation or not. Please note that this procedure is completely safe and regularly used in research and clinical settings. We will also ask you to perform some mental tasks, count your heartbeats and fill some questionnaires.
The study involves a single experimental session of 90–120 minutes and you will receive £50 for your time and effort. We will also refund any reasonable travel expenses upon presentation of a receipt.
All potential participants must:
• Be female
• Be aged 18 to 50 years
• Have no known heart or chronic pain condition
• Have a letter of diagnosis
