Looking for creative individuals to help deliver our SDBM Maquillage: Skin Camouflage and Support Workshop: October 2022
Skin Deep Behind the Mask (SDBM) supporting sufferers of skin disease, their families and carers
The role
SKIN DEEP Behind the Mask (SDBM) has been set up to help educate and raise awareness of the difficulties and obstacles faced by skin disease patients, their families and carers; as well as to help provide support and better understanding of skin disease. SKIN DEEP Behind the Mask is unique as it is the only UK charity concerned with all skin diseases. It is estimated that 8 million people in the UK are suffering with skin disease.
With countless other charities all vying for support, SDBM stands out as a voice for a group of society which has frequently been overlooked for attention and funding. Severe skin diseases remain something of an enigma, with insufficient knowledge and research in the field. At best, a sufferer may learn to cope with their condition, but others tolerate a life of pain.
Sadly for the most serious of skin diseases there remains no cure. It can be extremely debilitating, painful and lead to long-term hospitalisation. Aside from the more visible physical effects, skin disease can lead to enforced job losses with ramifications on relationships, as well as inviting the inevitable prejudice that can come with an appearance that is not considered “normal”.
Further publicity, awareness and research is desperately needed to break the misconception of skin disease being a superficial ailment.
