Working closely with both internal and external stakeholders, the Community Wellbeing Manager will further develop SMH’s community engagement aspirations, strengthening and establishing relationships/partnerships with the communities in and around Bethnal Green.
At the heart of SMH’s community engagement strategy are our community projects. Our newest project, the Yoganest, is a community wellbeing studio whose purpose is to help improve the health and wellbeing in the local area, by providing low cost/ free yoga, dance, ballet, meditation, tai chi etc classes or workshops.
Our aspirations for the Yoganest reflect our ambitions for SMH. We believe that by working with the local community, through the Yoganest, we have the opportunity both to help tackle wellbeing issues and to engage the community with SMH’s work.
A priority task for the Community Wellbeing Manager will be to manage the Yoganest. The CWM reports to the Communications Manager and works closely with other members of the SMH team, colleagues from partner organisations, local stakeholders and community organisations, and external professional advisors where appropriate.
Objectives
Specific objectives will include, but not be limited to:
1. Developing, implementing and evaluating the SMH’s community engagement activities
2. Managing the Yoganest, our wellbeing studio
3. Act as a first point of contact for residents and instructors, providing excellent service and knowledgeable support, information and guidance
4. Providing support to local residents to transform ideas into projects and enterprises, which build on strengths, meet needs and aspirations and tackle wellbeing concerns in the community.
5. Developing strategic relationships with local stakeholders (including local residents and their representatives, community/third sector organisations, and local authority public health teams) and collaborate on community engagement activities.
6. Attend residents/local organisations meetings and share information about our activities. Liaise continuously with residents during the development process particularly those living in Bethnal Green.
7. Act as an ambassador for the Yoganest and St. Margaret’s House, representing it at relevant local events and delivering presentations to promote our projects
8. Commissioning/co-producing community health and wellbeing projects
9. Ensuring that the community engagement approach is integrated with the SMH communication strategy and providing feedback and strategic advice on community engagement to the Communications Manager
10. Contributing to the work of the wider SMH team, including internal/external communications and events, openly sharing knowledge and expertise and collaborate on joint initiatives
11. Carry out general administrative work including record keeping, database updating, reports etc.
Community Wellbeing Manager Person Specification
This role is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engagement/communications specialist to develop the SMH community engagement model.
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated engagement or communications professional with a strong interest in improving local health outcomes.
The role will require the following:
experience
• experience of working in community engagement and/or communications
• Project management experience, including experience of commissioning/co-creating and managing community projects (experience of health projects is desirable)
• experience of working with a range of stakeholders, including local government, healthcare providers, third sector organisations
Knowledge
• Educated to degree level or equivalent and holding relevant professional qualifications
• Knowledge of methods and channels for engaging with a wide range of stakeholders
• A comprehensive knowledge of good communications and engagement practice
• Knowledge of the voluntary and not-for-profit sectors
Skills
• Outstanding communication skills, both oral and written, and the ability to engage and build relationships with a range of stakeholders
• Strong organisational and planning skills, the ability to prioritise in the face of competing demands, and proven success in delivering work to tight deadlines
• Excellent interpersonal skills, enabling the post holder to work effectively as part of a team
Personal attributes
• An interest in health issues and physical and emotional wellbeing
• Entrepreneurial and imaginative
• High levels of self-motivation, with the ability to work within an environment subject to change
• Flexible attitude to working environment and ability to work as part of a team
