Eastside Youth is a new youth work charity, that started in January 2022 and is based in East London aiming to change the lives of young people and has been set up in response to the massive and severe funding cuts and closures of youth services across East London, leaving young people with lack of services and feeling isolated in a time where young people already feel segregated from society with no real voice.
#YouthWorkChangesLives and at Eastside Youth we aim to facilitate that change by giving young people aged 11 to 19 years old based in East London the tools and skills to lead active and independent lives by providing interactive and engaging structured youth activities, training opportunities and support that will help improve their physical, mental, emotional, social and educational well-being.
We have launched our pilot youth project which is a monthly LGBT + Youth Group in Havering East London in partnership with Havering Council and are preparing to launch our next youth programs later throughout this year.
We are recruiting a Chair of the Board of Trustees to join us as our first Chair at Eastside Youth. The Chair will be responsible for providing leadership and direction to the board of Trustees, especially as a new charity with Trustees who have never been on a board before and to enable the Board to fulfil its responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the organisation, ensuring an active and participative Board of Trustees who help shape, grow and move our organisation forward.
We are seeking someone with previous Trustee experience, or who has senior experience, ideally within a youth work, young peoples or service delivery statutory organisation or charity, who is able to help build connections and positive networks that will great opportunities for Eastside Youth.
We are also seeking a chair who has excellent people skills and can work with our Founder and Director building a good, positive and close working relationship, ensuring our hard working Director has the support needed.
Responsibilities:
1. Ensure that the charity pursues its objects as defined in its governing document, charity law, company law and other relevant legislation/regulations.
2. To work in partnership with the Founder and Director and support the volunteer frontline team, helping them achieve the aims of the organisation; and to optimise the relationship between the board of Trustees and the team.
3. Facilitate the board of trustees in stimulating excellent, well-rounded and carefully considered strategic decision-making and help Eastside Youth to make positive impact across East London as a youth work organisation.
4. To lead on /assist in fundraising and bid writing to ensure that Eastside Youth has all the needed funds and resources to carry out its services for young people.
5. Using contacts and networks to help Eastside Youth grow and develop and to be an active ambassador for Eastside Youth.
6. To create and regularly update Eastside Youth policies and procedures, strategies, risk framework.
7. Other duties required and expected of a Chair and Trustee.
Time Commitment and  Work Location:
This role would ideally be approximately. 6-8 hours per month commitment, managed flexibly and with some remote working, with presence during needed evenings and weekends in line with our core service provision hours and during Trustee Meetings.
Currently Trustee Meetings are held on a Monday evening, once a month but will later move to bi-monthly/quarterly once we have completed the charity registration process and completed the set up phase of Eastside Youth.
experience, Qualities and Skills Required:
1. Significant Trustee/Board experience or someone who has been a senior management representative of the Board or senior experience in youth work, work with young people, service delivery or within a charity.
2. Previous Chair experience is desirable although not essential.
3. Passion and commitment towards the development of young people and social change.
4. Leadership experience and the ability to work collaboratively with people, businesses and partnership organisations.
5. Good, independent judgement, political impartiality and the ability to think creatively in the context of the organisation and external environment.
