Male participants required for a major new personality study
Volunteers are needed to participate in a new experiment on personality and responses to anxiety-related drugs. To be eligible to take part in this study you must be male, between the age of 18 and 40 and in good general health. As we will be conducting a DNA analysis both of your biological parents must from a British or Irish background. You must be a non-smoker and non heavy coffee drinker, must not be taking prescribed or over-the-counter medication and not have a history of dyslexia, psychiatric illness, drug addiction/alcoholism, or significant medical disorders that have required hospital treatment. You must also be a native English speaker. The experiment will be taking place at the Institute of Psychiatry in South East London (mostly on weekday mornings but there may also be some slots on weekend mornings) and has received ethical approval from King's College Hospital Research Ethics Committee (Ref: 08/H0808/23).
The experiment will be split into 4 sessions each lasting about 4 hours. Each session will occur on consecutive weeks so you must be available for at least a month. The first session will start with an interview to check your suitability for the study. During the second, third and fourth sessions you will receive a tablet (either placebo or one of two well-established drugs used in the treatment of panic and anxiety: Citalopram or Lorazepam) and then do a joystick experiment. If you complete all four sessions you will be reimbursed with GBP200 for your time as well as the inconvenience of participation. You will also receive travel expenses for each session that you attend and you will have the opportunity to obtain feedback about your particular personality profile. We will be starting testing in the next couple of weeks and anticipate finishing the four sessions within about 6 weeks. The precise testing days would depend on the doctor's availability and also the participants' schedules.
